What is blackstrap molasses? Is it really healthy?

For the longest time I didn’t even know what blackstrap molasses is. I thought it was some kind of sugar syrup and I honestly didn’t understand why all the health promoting people suggested taking molasses. Well, I decided to educate myself and since what I found is quite interesting and I really love its odd taste, I have decided to share my discovery with you! 🙂

What is blackstrap molasses?

Blackstrap molasses is byproduct is sugar making. Basically, when sugar is fully extracted from raw sugar cane, then what’s left is this syrup consistency and bittersweet tasting product, in other words, blackstrap molasses.

I know what you are thinking, how could sugar be healthy?

Well, blackstrap molasses is concentrated part of sugar cane that contains all the healthy vitamins and minerals. You see, sugar isn’t healthy because all those good vitamins and minerals are removed. This is the part of sugar that actually IS healthy!

How is blackstrap molasses healthy?

This concentrated form of sugar contains lots of healthy vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin B6
  • Manganese
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Iron
  • Selenium
  • Copper
  • Calcium
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Niacin
  • Phosphorus
  • Sodium

Iron and manganese and magnesium play very important role in woman’s body – balancing hormones. The high content of those three will therefore result in better sleep, better mood, easier menstruation cycle, and higher energy levels.

Moreover, magnesium, calcium and manganese prevent blood from clotting, which will relieve menstrual cramps.

Therefore, if you hate your PMS take blackstrap molasses. By the way, if you crave chocolate before and during your Period – molasses could help! Chocolate craving comes from low levels of Magnesium in your body and as presented above blackstrap molasses contains lots of magnesium.

How to include molasses in my diet?

Otherwise, all the great benefits of it can’t get to you because those vitamins and minerals need vitamin C to be absorbed.

As an example, I like to add a little bit of blackstrap molasses to my morning oatmeal. Where comes the vitamin C – from the berries I also add to my oatmeal! Easy! 😀

One thing I want to point out, I made a mistake by thinking that blackstrap molasses could be used as a sweetener – although it is made out of sugar it has an odd BITTERSWEET taste.

I highly recommend you try this amazing all natural PMS reliever out yourself!

Also remember, molasses is good for iron, manganese, magnesium and calcium and lots of more!
