When I started to learn more about health and healthy eating, then this word combination came up all the time. Sometimes it seemed to mean vegetables, sometimes it seemed to refer to some bigger group of foods then just vegetables.

What is Whole Foods?

Wholefood (in plural whole foods) by definition is food that has been processed or refined as little as possible and is free from additives or other artificial substances.

The main thing here is unprocessed: whole foods are foods that are as close to there original form as possible. Take bananas for example: wholefood is regular banana (fresh or froze), not wholefood is banana ice cream.

The term wholefood usually refers to plant based foods. This is very logical – meat and meat products need more processing than plant based foods to make them tasty and eatable.

So what the term wholefood includes: whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables that are all processed and refined as little as possible. In the next sections I will be explaining them a bit more thoroughly

Whole grains

Whole grains are a good source of carbohydrates because they contain lots of nutrients and dietary fiber. Whole grains basically is very little processed grain, which keeps healthy nutritional value that grains naturally are.

To make it clear, refining grains does the exact opposite – nutritional value and amount of dietary fiber goes both down.

Whole grains additionally contain more essential amino acids and contain more protein. Whole grains (unprocessed grains) slows or prevents the digestion of starch. Starch is

In small part of our population can gluten trigger several diseases. Gluten is protein that can be found in wheat and related grains.

Examples are: Wheat, Rice, Barley, Rye, Oats, Quinoa, Wild rice, Amaranth

Legumes

Legumes are an excellent choice for plant basted protein, they are also very high in dietary fiber and resistant starch. Additionally, that contain dietary minerals, which is always a very good thing.

The way I have recognized is that legumes are the main protein source for vegans.

Some legumes are: beans, chick peas, and lentils.

Fruits

Fruits are awesome source of vitamins minerals and what a wonderful taste they’ve got!

Although, I need to remind you that blueberry muffins and apple pie are highly processed and extremely unhealthy way to consume them.

Vegetables

Wholefood vegetables are very little processed and very little refined vegetables. Vegetables are the healthiest food on planet and whatever your goal is – health, happiness, losing weight, having more energy – then this is the group you should include in your diet.
